Causa Sui (cause of itself)

That's the word that reminds me of this post. I originally stumbled on this word in the fantastic book "Denial of Death" by Ernest Becker. Becker shows that dark existentialism (despair and unhappiness) can be solved through finding a purpose to life, real or imagined.

I think, for myself, meaningful work is that kind of work that adds to what I am passionate about. So work that ties into my hobbies no longer feels like work but a way to better myself. I'm sure there are many other answers but that is how I feel.

Great article Steve! I've incorporated much of this into a new employee survey tool called the Meaningful Work Inventory (MWI). I started developing it as part of a PhD requirement. It's good to see all of the touchpoints echoed by someone else.

Yes - I have to agree.

People who see meaning in their work are far happier than those just going through the motions.
Meaningful work helps us all find our place in the world. Those of us who see no meaning are left to wonder why we are here. That sense of belonging is vital to happiness.
